La etapa, aunque sea por carretera, tiene su dificultad. Subir el Tichka, un puerto que asciende a los 2.260 metros de altitud, requiere un cuidado especial de la temperatura del motor a pesar del frío y la nieve que encontrarán a su paso. Los equipos son advertidos de que hoy nos despedimos de nuestros guardianes, el grupo de mecánicos con el gran Jaboud a la cabeza, así que más vale prevenir.
La Gran Aventura siempre acecha. A la ventisca se ha sumado una intensa nevada que ha dado todavía más épica al paso de las antiguas mecánicas por Marruecos. Hace apenas 48 horas los Santanas y Series estaban labrando dunas. Hoy se regodean entre la nieve y el barro de los tramos de carretera en construcción. Los equipos del Norte de Europa se sentían como en casa. Limpiar carrocerías en Ouarzazate no ha sido tan buena idea, después de todo.
Mientras ruedan entre nubes por las montañas nevadas que les separan de Marrakech, los Santanas y Series se presentan con el orgullo de la labor cumplida. Han sido días extremos para estas pequeñas fieras a través de trialeras, pistas rápidas, dunas y asfalto.
El Marruecos más salvaje ha servido a Santana Trophy para llevar a cabo este homenaje a las antiguas mecánicas y a sus tozudos propietarios, que han preparado verdaderas joyas con una fiabilidad sorprendente. Y es que recorrer un total de seis mil kilómetros, como lo han hecho varios desde distintos puntos de Europa, no sólo requiere un esfuerzo físico y mental, exige llevar las mecánicas funcionando como un reloj.
Conforme pasan las ediciones, Santana Trophy se empeña en rendir homenaje también a las grandes y míticas pruebas que antaño pasaban por algunas de las rutas que han recorrido los Santanas y Series este año. Parías Dakar o Camel Trophy siempre están presentes en el concepto y el diseño de La Gran Aventura.
Ya instalados en Marrakech, los 66 aventureros se acercaban a la ceremonia de entrega de premios en el interior del hotel, pues la lluvia nos ha obligado a refugiarnos bajo techo. Estos días tan intensos han servido también para forjar amistades que prometen futuras nuevas aventuras. Ejemplo vivo de ello son los equipos veteranos. Aventureros de distintas partes de la geografía que Santana Trophy ha unido en pasadas ediciones. Este año han surgido nuevos vínculos que prometen perdurar. Al menos el ambiente así lo reflejaba.
Toca premiar a los ganadores de las distintas categorías. Aunque Santana Trophy no es una carrera de velocidad, la habilidad a la hora de orientarse y de conducir por los distintos terrenos o el adecuado trabajo de taller merecen su recompensa. El equipo ganador ha sido finalmente el dorsal #34 de Carlos Pérez-Marsá y José Luís Tolbaños. Además del trofeo, el patrocinador Recambios Dipe 4x4 ha obsequiado al equipo valenciano con un vale de 400 euros en piezas y recambios.
En la categoría de coche mejor restaurado el ganador ha sido el dorsal numero #55 de Christoph Wolters y Zaneta Wolters por su impecable Santana 88 matricula de Jaén y restaurado en Alemania. Green and Gold, también patrocinador, ha entregado un overdrive reconstruido de Santana a la pareja alemana.
El premio al mejor espíritu de equipo, que votan los propios participantes, se lo ha llevado el equipo #28 de Jean Michel Guinet y Justine Guinet. Euro4x4parts ha obsequiado al equipo francés con un vale de 400 euros.
Con una copa de vino para el brindis final, la organización y los participantes se felicitaban mutuamente y se despedían con un hasta luego. Muchos aventureros prometen repetir y embarcarse en Santana Trophy 2019 que ya tiene fechas: Del 23 al 29 de marzo.

STAGE 6.- OUARZAZATE - MARRAKECH

Although all of the stage is done by road, this doesn’t mean it’s effortless; climbing the Tichka is no easy task. 2260 meters at it’s highest point, the drive requires taking special care with the engine’s temperature, even in the freezing temperatures and snow that the teams found during their climb. Everyone’s been warned that today we must say goodbye to our team of mechanics, with the great Jaboud at its head, so better be safe than sorry.
But The Great Adventure isn’t over yet. The intense wind and the snow that falls relentlessly paint an epic scene as these vintage machines continue to cross Morocco. Less than 48 hours ago they were plowing through dunes. Today they take delight in the snow and mud of the stretches of road still in construction. The teams from Northern Europe feel right at home. It’s clear that cleaning the cars back in Ouarzazate hasn’t been a good idea after all.
Rolling through clouds and the snowy peaks that separate them from Marrakech, the Santanas and Series present themselves with the pride that comes from a job well done. The past days have been extreme for these small beasts as they hurtled through rocky trails, fast tracks, dunes and asphalt.
The wildest part of Morocco has given Santana Trophy the opportunity of homaging these historic mechanics and their obstinate owners. They have prepared these gems with the astounding reliability needed to travel safely over 6000 kilometers, as some fo the teams have done. Not an easy task at all, and only accomplished thanks to their great physical and mental effort, and the trustworthiness of their machines.
As the editions go by, Santana Trophy keeps insisting in homaging the great races that used to pass through some of the routes traveled this year by the Santanas and Series. Paris Dakar and Camel Trophy are always present in the concept and the design of The Great Adventure.
Once in Marrakech and driven inside by the rain that pours in the Moroccan city, the participants gather in groups as they wait for the award ceremony to begin. The intensity of these past few days has forged friendships that promise new adventures in the future. Proof of this are the veteran teams that Santana Trophy has united in past editions, and the new bonds formed this year promise to last, or so it seems.
It’s finally time to hand out the awards. Even though Santana Trophy is not a speed race, the skills necessary to find their bearings and drive on the different terrains, or an adequate preparation of the vehicles,deserve their reward. Team #34, with Carlos Perez-Marsá and José Luís Tolbaños, won the Navigation Trophy, which consists of a personalized trophy and 400€ to spend in Recambios Dipe 4x4, one of the sponsors.
In the category of Best Kept, the winner was team #55, Christoph Wolters and Zaneta Wolters, for their immaculate Santana 88, registered in Jaén and restored in Germany. Green and Gold, also sponsors, added a reconstructed overdrive to the award for the German couple.
The Best Team Spirit award, voted by the participants, went to team #28, with Jean Michel Guinet and Justine Guinet. Euro4x4parts contributed to this prize with a 400€ voucher.
With some wine for the final toast, the organization and the participants congratulated and bed farewell to each other. Many of these adventurers promise to repeat and enroll in Santana Trophy 2019, for which we’ve already got dates: From the 23rd to the 29th of March.
‘The Great Adventure starts when leaving home’ is the slogan on the participant’s t-shirts. Now it’s time for the long way back, the resistance test that puts the end to the experience, as everyone heads home.
