Dos intensos días de pistas recorriendo gran parte del Sur más árido de Marruecos conforman la Maratón de #LaGranAventura. 500 kilómetros –que han hecho casi íntegramente por pista- en 48 horas son el plato fuerte de Santana Trophy. De aquí en adelante, será mucho lo que los participantes tendrán que masticar.
“Tras los abastecimientos necesarios en Rissani el más puro desierto os espera”. Así los lanzaba la organización a primera hora de la mañana hacia la aventura. Las sucesivos cambios de la accidentada orografía alauita hoy se han vuelto salvajes. Los participantes, que tragan kilómetros y viñetas del roadbook sin parar, hoy se mueven entre la fatiga que causan las grandes distancias y la excitación de una ruta que les hace sentir como exploradores. La incontenible magnitud de los muy diversos territorios que pisan, hace hoy la diferencia.
El descanso les aguardaba al término de la primera jornada en el extinto cráter volcánico de Tagounite. Al que llegaban de noche. Unas horas de recuperación para todos los que conforman Santana Trophy-participantes y organización-, dan un ritmo más pausado alrededor del fuego de campamento. Las anécdotas, risas y aquello que los LandRover Santana y Series cargan tras sus cajas de aluminio se comparte.
DÍA DOS
El día rompe temprano en ‘Volcano’. Desayunar y que corra el café –por litros– supone la inyección de moral necesaria para encarar la segunda parte de la maratón. La comenzaban con una prueba de orientación, donde los equipos han tenido que encontrar una serie de balizas en esta extensa llanura.
Con la ‘especial’ terminada, Santana Trophy ponía rumbo a la arena. Tras atravesar los palmerales de la zona, y la última población -la de Mhamid- los equipos disfrutaban de sus pequeñas y divertidas dunas, que se dilatan durante kilómetros –a modo de entrada- hasta el escarpado ´Erg Chegaga’.
Encontrar las balizas rodeadas de medio metro de arena ha sido una tarea difícil para todos los equipos,pero que sacaa relucir lo mejor del espíritu de aventura, llevándolos más allá en sus propios objetivos individuales. Son bestias en su ambiente lo que manejan.
Ya entrada la tarde, les llegaba el postre de esta inmensa comilona cuando la extraordinaria planicie del Lago Iriki hacia su aparición anunciando el principio del final de esta etapa Maratón. El final, vendría tras otros muchos kilómetros discurridos en paralelo con la cordillera que limita la planicie de este vasto valle, frontera natural con Argelia.
Muy al sur, el descanso llegaba al alcanzar Foum-Zguid. No es poca cosa para estos clásicos con muchos años y muchos miles de kilómetros a sus espaldas. Nadie, duda ya del eslogan tan acertado que usaba la marca española: Duro entre los duros. El Hotel BabRimal era su meta. Un clásico en #LaGranAventura.
STAGE FOUR AND FIVE. MERZOUGA – TAGOUNITE
– FOUM ZGUID. THE GREAT MARATHON.
DAY ONE
Two intense days of off road tracks along a great part of the arid South of Morocco compose #TheGreatAdventure’s Marathon. 500 kilometres –done for the most part on dirt, sand and stone tracks- in 48 hours are the main attraction at Santana Trophy. From here on, the teams are going to have to work really hard.
“After stopping in Rissani to replenish supplies, the real desert awaits you”. These words released the participants into the adventure first thing in the morning. The alauite orography changes before the participant’s eyes, which burn through the roadbook’s kilometres without pause; today they move between the fatigue brought by the long distances and the excitement caused by a route that makes them feel like explorers. The immensity and magnitude of the landscapes they visit today certainly marks a difference.
The much-desired rest awaited them at the end of a very long first half of the stage at the extinct crater in Tagounite, where they all arrive well past the set time. A few hours of respite allow the teams and the organization to slow down and take a break by the campfire. Anecdotes, laughs and the contents of the boxes they all carry in their Land Rover Santana and Series, are shared between everyone.
DAY TWO
The day starts early in ‘Volcano’. Breakfast and litres of coffee are the boost of morale needed to face the second stage of the Marathon. It begins with an orientation test in which the teams have to find a set of marks in the extensive plain.
With the special test behind them, Santana Trophy set off towards the sand. After crossing the few palm tree groves and the last settlement in the area –Mhamid- the teams enjoy the fun little dunes that form the long entrance to the abrupt ‘Erg Chegaga’.
Finding the marks surrounded by half a metre of sand is not an easy task for any of the teams, but it also brings out the most of their adventurous spirit and takes them far beyond their individual goals. The beasts they drive are at home in these surroundings.
As the afternoon wears on, their arrival at the immense plain of Iriki Lake sets the perfect ending for this incredible day, announcing the beginning of the end of the Marathon stage. The real end would come after many kilometres of driving parallel to the mountain range that limits the vast plain, a natural border with Argelia.
Even further south, rest finally comes as they reach Foum-Zguid. No small thing for these classics with many years and more kilometres on their backs. No one can doubt now the well-chosen slogan the Spanish brand used: Tough among toughs. Bab Rimal Hotel is their goal for the day, a landmark at #TheGreatAdventure.
