SANTANA TROPHY 2016. Etapa #2. Ifrane-Orion-Merzouga

With a cool - some might even say cold - start at Ifrane, the second stage gave way in few kilometers to the first brusque climatic change experienced by the participants. At their backs, the last vestiges of the northern Moroccan snow, and ahead of them, the heat and sand of the desert. The teams crossed the ports that conform the Mid-Atlas, connecting the north of the country to the Ziz area, known for its rich and biodiverse land.

Another stage, another change in rhythm. The rise in temperature was one of today’s struggles, but not the last. After a forced regroupment due to a broken route - which was used as a perfect excuse for lunch - the teams started towards the ‘City of Orion’, for a deeper acquaintance with the Moroccan sand, and the ‘Orientation’ part of the stage.

Time restraints and a some ill-timed problems meant this special part had to be cancelled, and everyone waited patiently while the organization designed a new course for the past part of the day. Some used this pause as an excuse to practice in the sand, beginning to really know their cars and their very special off road qualities. While the stage hasn’t really gone as planned, everyone enjoyed the new developments in different ways.

It wouldn’t be a true experience without some mechanical incident - luckily, with fairly easy repairs -, like Rasmus and Hannes’ (‘Team Sandy’) broken accelerator pedal, or ‘Team Roasfrog’s’ obstructed gas tube. After a few quick repairs, the teams continued through the stony valleys until they reached the road. Winding through Erfoud, the last rays of sun took them to their final destination for the day: the Erg Chebbi. While some teams prepped their cars for tomorrow, others paid a visit to the local ‘Garage Royal’ for a more complicated, but completely solvable, repair.

Tomorrow, the whole group will enjoy the dunes of Merzouga.
